Housing UW: Your Guide to Off-Campus Apartments Near University of Washington

 housing uw

Housing UW students need most is centered around the University District — but the U District has gotten expensive and increasingly competitive. Knowing your alternatives and acting at the right time in Seattle's rental cycle can save you hundreds per month and still keep you close to class.

Where to Look for Housing Near UW

The U District sits directly adjacent to campus and is the most walkable option. NE 45th Street and University Way NE ("The Ave") are the main commercial corridors, and apartment density is high. Ravenna, just north, is quieter with more houses and duplexes — popular with grad students and upperclassmen who want a residential feel without the undergraduate-heavy density of the U District. Wallingford, about 2 miles west, offers character-filled streets and easy bus access via the 44. Roosevelt, to the north, is connected via Link Light Rail with a UW stop — a 10-minute ride to central campus.

Rent Ranges for Housing UW Students Typically Find

In the U District, shared rooms run $1,100–$1,500/month. Studios start around $1,600. Ravenna and Roosevelt tend to run $100–$200 less per unit for similar square footage. Wallingford is similar to Ravenna. Utilities are often separate — budget $80–$120/month in winter when Seattle heating costs climb. Most leases are 12 months, with August or September move-in aligning to the academic year.

UW Housing Tips

  • Seattle's rental market moves in spring — look in March through May for fall availability

  • Link Light Rail connects Roosevelt, Capitol Hill, and the UW station directly — great for transit-reliant students

  • Confirm whether heat is electric or gas — Seattle winters are wet and heating costs vary by building

  • The UW campus is large — check the walk time to your specific buildings, not just 'campus'
